Last night was a really fun PTA event that our school held for the first time. Stephanie learned a few months back that The Home Depot will come out to your school with “You Build It” kits and all the supplies necessary to complete the projects. They bring hammers, screw drivers, paint, brushes, everything you would need to walk out with a finished project. They even give out aprons, project pins, and certificates to take home as well. So last night they brought 3 free projects. A wooden picture frame, wooden bobsleds, and wood toolboxes. Each kit contains parts, hardware, and instructions. After getting the kits, the cafeteria became crazy loud with all the hammering. But kids were having a blast. We decided to have it right before Christmas so kids could come make a gift for someone. We figured it would be the best time to have maximum participation. We had somewhere between 35 and 40 kids come with their parents (a ton of dad’s which is rare for a school event) and get busy. It was really great seeing the look of concentration as they nailed things together, screwed things together and got creative with the paint. We had everything from kindergarteners to middle school kids. We opened it up to anyone that was there since we had enough kits. The looks of pride at their accomplished kits made it all worth it. And as I said, it was all FREE! Just a way they give back to the community.
